Janainas e.V. takes part in discussion on domestic violence at the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin

On September 16, Janainas e.V. took part in the event Mulheres em Ação (Women in Action), held at the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin. The roundtable brought together community leaders, representatives of social organizations, and Brazilian authorities to discuss urgent issues related to migrant women’s rights, with a special focus on domestic violence.

The event featured the Brazilian activist Luiza Brunet, who shared her journey and experiences advocating for women. Representing Janainas were Talita Lincoln (President), Teresa Bueno, and Ana Pires (coordinators of the Apoio Social project).

According to Talita, the meeting was “a very rich, vulnerable exchange, full of willingness to do more to change this reality. Overall, I felt a strong commitment to understanding the situations faced by Brazilian women abroad, especially in relation to domestic violence, and an effort to increasingly connect the institutions that serve and support the Brazilian community.”

Ana Pires emphasized the importance of the event for the Apoio Social project: “The event was very valuable, especially for exchanging contacts with other organizations. At this stage of the project, it is crucial to know that we can rely on these institutions to share knowledge and learning.”

Key topics of discussion included:

  • The need for continuous educational measures;

  • The importance of connecting organizations, civil society, and consulates;

  • Awareness-raising initiatives that take into account the cultural and legal differences between Brazil and Germany.

Germany (2024)

  • Number of people registered as victims of domestic violence: 265,942 in 2024, representing an increase of about 3.8% compared to 2023.

  • Around 73% of the victims are women.

  • Approximately 171,069 cases involved violence by a partner or ex-partner, an increase of about 1.9% compared to the previous year.

  • Another 94,873 cases of intrafamilial violence (by family members other than partners) were recorded, an increase of about 7.3%.

  • There is no recent consolidated public statistic on “femicide” with the same clarity and definition as in some countries. Reports mention that in 2023 about 360 women were killed by partners or ex-partners (closed cases of gender-based killings of women), but official comparable figures for 2024 have not yet been released.
